Description
Photograph of a Signal Hill oil gusher, in Long Beach, ca.1923. A derrick erupts with oil and smoke at center, and an arrow edited onto the photo leads to some text which reads "Union Oil co's L.B.C. 11 Signal Hill". In front of the gusher stands another tall wooden derrick, built into several house-like structures and a tank at its base. In the background, the silhouettes of several other derricks can be made out through the smoke, and a tangle of utility pole lining streams overhead. In the foreground sits a pool of water dug into the ground, in which one can see the reflection of the scene.
