Description
Mexico Trip - in orchard, pruning; in market; Mrs. Roeding and others; church; Tree dahlia; floating gardens of Xochimilco; Rooftops; cathedral; ends with a bay and some palm fronds. The California Nursery Company had operations and nursery agents in Mexico and they needed to visit Mexico periodically. The movies of Mexico contain visits to orchards, towns, landscapes, and possibly nurseries. Nursery personnel appear in the movie as well as the Roeding family. Probably the visits to Mexico influenced the Old California theme that the nursery embraced in their marketing. In the 1930s the theme of the California Nursery Company changed to embrace the Mexican presence in California. The "Old Adobe" at the nursery dated from the 1830s or 1840s and was originally on the lands of José de Jésus Vallejo. George Roeding, Jr. converted the "Old Adobe" to a comfortable "Guest Lodge" where guest were entertained by Mexican and Spanish singers and dancers. The "Old Adobe" became the California Nursery Company's logo and is reflected in their catalogs and naming of rose selections. Box says "Mexico 1960, Iaxco; apulco"
