Description
Photograph of a young woman in front of the first church and school in La Crescenta, ca.1940. The young woman stands at center, dressed in a striped blouse and knee-length skirt, looking off to the right. Behind her, the concrete building of the combination school/church is shown from the broad side, a stencil reading "Boarding Service" having been painted over an old Red Grange Tobacco poster that is affixed to the building's exterior. An early automobile is visible parked along the sidewalk at right. Something has distorted the image in the lower left corner. According to an earlier record, the church was Presbyterian and built out of concrete and stone by Benjamin B. Briggs in 1885. His niece, Miss Helen Haskell (later Mrs. S. Seymour Thomas), was the first teacher, from 1886-1887. Ninteen pupils were enrolled: the average daily attendance was fourteen.
