Corner view of a large 3 story building; on ground floor is located "WING & SONS"; 2nd and 3rd floors have more unified facade with 8 tall windows on the front side and 5 windows each on the corner side; on the front side a balcony below the third storey 2nd to left window has a ladder descending down to the roof of the first floor; at street level cars are parked in front of businesses and small groups of people congregate; on left side of photo next to the principle building is "PORTOLA CAFE Italian Dinners."
Walter Hepting was born in Sacramento (father was from Switzerland, mother from Germany). Worked for the State Treasurer's Office. Was amateur historian, collected old photographs and images of Sacramento.
Building erected by Maddux & Co Whole sale Merchants from Arkansas, in 1854. The third story was once occupied by the Odd Fellows Lodge in 1854...It was also the office of the County Sheriff, recorder and treasurer in 1856...David Maddux was the County Treasurer in that year."
