Photograph caption dated June 27, 1963 reads, "Some 150 handicapped children boarded buses and station wagons this week to head for the two camps of the Crippled Children's Society of Los Angeles County - 100 to Paivika in the San Bernardino Mountains and 50 to Joan Mier on the coast beyond Malibu. Following medical inspection at the take-off point, society grounds at 325 W. Adams Blvd., Los Angeles, the children were helped into waiting vehicles for the trip to vacationland with their wheel chairs, crutches and braces accepted as regulation camping gear. Accepted only with the approval of family physicians, the children will enjoy all the traditional camping activities, but at the slower pace geared to their special needs, officials said."
