"Die Werf in Gnadenthal Platz, wo Georg Schmidts Haus stand." ("The mission premises in Genadendal place where Georg Schmidt's house had been standing."). In the center of the picture is a small path with trees and two dwellings at its side. The word "Werf" is a term taken from Afrikaans meaning "premises" or "yard". -- Georg Schmidt (1709-1785), born in Kunewalde, was a missionary of the Herrnhuter Brüdergemeine in South Africa from 1737-1744. He served in Söte Mecks Valley and Sergeant Revier (Baviaanskloof, i.e. Genadendal). In 1744 he went back to Europe and two years later he married Maria Wahovsky[?] in Herrnhaag. He died in Niesky, Germany. -- The picture was probably taken by Samuel Baudert (1879-1956), born as son of the missionary Samuel Baudert in South Africa. He was the mission director of the Herrnhuter Brüdergemeine from 1924 to 1927 and since 1929 their bishop. It might also be possible that the picture was taken by Eugen Theodor Baudert (1876-1953) who worked as a lecturer at the theological seminar in Mvenyane.
