Exterior view of Jodo Shinshu Shinrankai Buddhist Church located at 15743 S. Normandie in the city of Gardena. Gardena has a large Japanese population, which is reflected in churches and stores. This close-up of the entrance shows the name of the church below a golden seal, which is of a bird in flight with Japanese letters written above it. Jodo Shinshu Shinrankai was founded to carry out one single and important mission: to propagate accuratly and promptly the teachings of Shinran Shonin, the Light of the World. The Shinrankai, (sees itself as) a reform movement within Shinshu tradition. Takamori Kentetsu, a graduate of Ryukoku University, founded it in 1958. Members of the Shinrankai see Takamori as the good teacher (zenchishiki) within a dharma-lineage. Under Takamori's leadership, the Shinrankai vigorously and persistently summons the Honganji to return to Shinran's true teaching. The Shinrankai headquarters are in Takaoka, Toyama, with groups in major cities in Japan as well as with representatives in Brazil and North America. Photo dated: December 30, 2006.
