Key Words: Claremont Schools; Moving to Claremont; Pilgrim Place Summary: [Tape 1] Ms. Rankin discusses purchasing several homes in Claremont. She remembers the location of several of the local business including Powells, Hodges Bakery, a drug store with a soda fountain, and an ice cream store. She discusses the closing of the Women’s League. She recalls teaching in several of the small local schools in Claremont in the 1960s. [Tape 2] Ms. Rankin had polio when she was a small girl, and she recalls getting physical therapy to help her recover in St. Louis. She remembers coming to California with her aunts when she was twenty to get further therapy for her polio. While she was receiving treatment, she met her husband, James Rankin, and together they moved to Claremont in 1941. She worked at Honnold Library for seventeen years before she retired. She fondly remembers living in Pilgrim Place – even though she was not retired at the time.
