Photograph caption dated October 4, 1958 reads, "Contrast in growth - Tallest things on Mojave Desert were Joshua trees until Air Force built its captive missile test site. Atlas missile is held in place by steel tower, like silver pinnacle being sculptured. Heat outside can be scorching, but in special box around tower, missiles can be subjected to 65 degrees below zero for Arctic testing."
