(SIDE 1) MILLER, William C. 1250 Market Street, Santa Clara, 296-4401 Mr. Miller was a member of the local Post Office for thirty years, serving the last two as the city’s postmaster. July 26, 1974. Education: parochial and public. Social life: family recreation, the Portuguese fiesta, semi-pro baseball, clubs and lodges, organizing the Young Men’s Institute in Santa Clara. The business district, Santa Clara and San Jose clothing stores compared, physical condition of the business district. The Post Office (1933-66): growth in personnel. Big industries (Thirties): the Pacific Redwood Casket Company. College town. Signs of urbanization: personal reaction, community reaction. Local politics: the normal issues here, politicking in Santa Clara, demise of the “old politics” in Santa Clara. Length—19 minutes. (SIDE 2) FAGOTHEY, Rev. Austin, S. J. Jesuit Residence, University of Santa Clara, 984-4242. Fr. Fagothey has been a professor of philosophy at the university for over forty years. July 29, 1974. College town. Ethnic composition. Movement to unite Santa Clara and San Jose (Thirties and Forties). The Depression: breadlines at the university, the university in the Depression. The canneries. Small town atmosphere.
