Description
"Gardener's House." Exterior view of a thatched house with gardener standing at the entrance. The garden was surveyed by Dr James Stewart, missionary and Principal of Lovedale college (1831-1905), and originally consisted of three long terraces laid out in a crescent shape on the slope leading down from the mission station to the sources of the Likubula River. As well as ornamental plants, the garden proved to be central to the development of economic crops in the region such as tea and coffee.
