Title supplied by cataloger.; The original photographic print is a reproduction. Actor George Mann (1905-1977) grew up in Silver Lake and moved to Santa Monica as a teenager with his parents. Starting out as a vaudevillian in the mid-1920s, Mann performed with various groups, with the USO during WWII, and held small parts in several movies. Mann took approximately 12,000 B&W photographs during his years in vaudeville, and in the early 1950s, he designed a 3-D viewer for his 3-D photographs, mostly taken around Southern California. He made arrangements to lease the viewers to various Los Angeles businesses, including restaurants, bars and doctor's offices. Every couple of weeks, George would swap out the photos of such tourist destinations as Disneyland, Knott's Berry Farm, Pacific Ocean Park, Watts Towers, Catalina Island, and Palm Springs. In the early 1970s, George was hired by Quaker Oats to portray King Vitaman in both commercials and on the front of the cereal box. This series represents the images Mann took of Bunker Hill homes in the 1960s.; All three structures have since been demolished. Rear exterior view of former Bunker Hill hotels on S. Grand Avenue, as seen from near the corner of Second and Olive streets; from left to right, the Richelieu Hotel (at 142), the original Melrose (at 130), and the Melrose Hotel "Annex" (at 120).
