Shades of L.A. is an archive of photographs representing the contemporary and historic diversity of families in Los Angeles. Images were chosen from family albums and include daily life, social organizations, work, personal and holiday celebrations, and migration and immigration activities. Title supplied by cataloger.; Image is a reproduction. Verna with the Sweet 16 Club on her Ford Coupe. The group are friends from Polytechnic High School summer school and gathered for house parties on the weekend. Often the friends would travel to school together in the one-seat car with up to five girls inside and several outside on the running board, until they were stopped by a police officer. The friends usually went to Ink Well beach in Santa Monica after school, and also used the car to visit friends in the days before radio.
