Description
This thorough annual report prepared by the friars in Santa Clara for the Franciscan authorities in California and Mexico City provides a brief account of the initial years of the Mission, the total number of sacraments administered to Spaniards and Indians since the Mission’s foundation, a detailed inventory of the Mission, the type and number of cattle raised in the Mission, as well as the variety and volume of crops sown and harvested in 1782. The 1782 annual report also includes a detailed census of the Indian neophytes who lived in Santa Clara; this document constitutes, most likely, the first census of the Santa Clara region.
