“Pupil nurses.” Group portrait of student nurses and in the middle sits the matron Sister Margaret Burt who arrived at Chogoria in 1947. Nurses were trained at Chogoria but it was not until 1953 that they started sitting the Government Nursing Examination. In 1949 there were twenty male dressers and twenty four female nurses at the hospital but nursing had a high turnover of students as many women left after a few years to get married. ❧ The image is from the collection of Dr Archibald Clive Irvine (1893-1974) showing the period from 1928-1961 at the Chogoria mission which was established in 1922.
