Description
This first-rate collection of poetry about wine and ale and drinking-in-general includes poems by William Blake, A.E. Housman, John Masefield, Robert Herrick, John Keats, William Shakespeare, and many other famous English writers. The colleciton ranges from the 12th to the late 19th centuries and is testimony to the allure that drink, especially wine, has had for English literature. Many are impassioned paeans to the vine ;some are cleverly humorous. A few, such as Herrick's "Ode to Ben Johnson" and Keats' "Lines on the Mermaid Tavern," are well-known from poetry anthologies, but others are gems we would know little of had they not been given another life by Mr. Hutchison. Cf. Gabler, p. 138.
