Description
Photograph shows two men and three women who are probably members of the S.R. Araki family standing on a dirt road in front of their house.
The house was located on the Araki ranch. The family owned several acres in Berryessa, and they cash leased other properties in Milpitas, and near their family ranch. In 1942 the Araki family faced forced internment as a result of World War II. Suyetaro Araki attempted to consolidate his land holdings and his son Harry, arranged with a "trusted" white businessman to run the farm in their absence. Suyetaro died at Heart Mountain. Harry and his mother returned to claim their property in 1945, only to discover that their trusted friend transferred ownership of the property to his name. See: Timothy J. Lukes and Gary Y. Okihiro, "Japanese Legacy; Farming and Community Life in California's Santa Clara Valley 91985), p. 122.
The house in this photograph also appears in "Group portrait of employees and family of Araki Ranch" in the John C. Gordon Panoramic Collection.
Scanned with Microtek Scanmaker 1000XL Pro; as a 600 dpi TIFF image in 8-bit Grayscale. Auto Level image processing applied and compressed into JPEG format using Photoshop CS3.
