Description
This 1930 photograph shows the Paintersville Bridge spanning the Sacramento River at a spot just south of Courtland. The bridge, a length of 200 feet, was named after Indiana native Levi Painter, who, in 1855, purchased a 123 acre ranch, and effectively established a community supported in large part by a salmon cannery. Painter built a sizable fortune based on the production of produce and beef, and operating a boarding house for those employed at the cannery. His namesake bridge – of the double leaf bascule moveable variety – was built in 1923, replacing a ferry system.
