Description
A nun stands among a crowd with her hands clasped together as she watches Pope John Paul II officiate an open air mass during his visit to Honduras. She wears sunglasses. During his visit to Honduras, Pope John Paul II reinforced the Catholic Church's conservative teachings, warning the faithful to reject all things contrary to the gospel, including "ideologies that lower the dignity of men and women." He also warned lay clergy to beware of being coopted by "radical political groups." In so doing, he reinforced the Church's opposition to the liberation of the region from foreign intervention and domination. Richard Cross took this image in 1983 while covering the presidential election and War of Liberation in El Salvador.
