Description
This textile is an example of a ""khanga,"" a traditional dress worn in Tanzania. While I did not see any locals wearing this specific example, I did notice many residents wearing alternative Obama khangas and other Obama paraphernalia. Davis '11 got the item at a crafts bazaar while studying abroad in Fall '09. It is mostly orange and features a black and white stars border. It features the American flag repeated five times and a portrait of Barack Obama. The text above Obama's portrait says ""Hongera Obama."" The text below Obama's portrait says ""Obama Chaguo La Mungo."" The translation of text over his head is ""Congratulations Obama,"" at the bottom ""Chosen by God.""
