Description
Photograph of U.S. cruiser West Virginia in the harbor, San Diego, ca.1911. At center, the large cruiser is seen anchored in the harbor. On the hull to the left, one anchor remains attached to the body of the ship, while the chain of the other anchor is clearly in the water. Several portholes and artillery stations line the side of the cruiser. Also, two small boats can be seen on the side of the ship near the hull. To the left of the ship, several men can be seen scattered about the deck. At the ship's center, four large smokestacks stand erect. To the right, a large mast is visible with a flag at its top. Similarly, flags can be seen at the bow and stern of the cruiser. To the left of the smokestacks, a large metallic tower is visible. Three small cylinders lie near the center of the tower. The tower lies atop a wide panel on the deck of the ship. Several windows can be seen on the front of the panel. In the background to the left, a rocky wall can be seen. To the right, a city can be seen in the background.
