Photograph was edited for publication purposes Photograph dated April 12, 1961 shows Paul Hackney, who developed the Newhall Navel Orange and is the head of the orchard division of the Newhall Land and Farming Co., tending the groves of orange trees that will be set aside for development. The article partially reads, "Across the Santa Susana Mountains of the San Fernando Valley, in the Santa Clara River Valley, lies the 42,000 acres of the Newhall Land and Farming Co. One of the largest privately owned land holdings in California, the lushly planted fields and hillsides hold the key to development of the Newhall-Saugus area. Los Angeles County planners say that by 1980 the ranch and surrounding area will be transformed into housing tracts, shopping centers, schools and industry sufficient to support a population of 180,000. Only 16,000 people live there today."
