Description
Note: "Kg. Ndj. Schwiegersohn Nzi Tankuo u. Frau Lydia Mongwene.
(Wuhrmann, A., 1917. Beschreibung zu den Lichtbildern aus Bamum. E-30-0,6).
Note translation: K[in]g Ndj[oya s] son-in-law Nzi Tankuo with his wife Lydia Mongwene. This pretty picture was taken two days after the wedding of this well-situated pair. Nzi Tankuo is a high official of the chief and wears the sign of his dignity around his neck. The little disc decorated with shells and glass beads is the sign of the lower official, and the thick ring with beads which hangs above it is the sign of a higher official. On great festivals gentlemen like this like to wear their jewellery and decorations. The young wife of the official is a daughter of our chief. She will be scarcely 14 years old - her new lord and master is at least three times older as his young little wife. Lydia Mongwene is wearing her bridal decorations in this picture. Around her neck hangs a long chain with alternatively glass beads and lion s teeth. Her arms and body are bound with stripes of leopard skin. And stuck in her curly hair, next to her temples, are long spines of a porcupine. The young chief s daughter s marriage festivities lasted 10 days. In her husband s compound she plays a [specific] role and is much respected by her co-wives. (A. Wuhrmann, 1917, Commentaries to Slides from Bamum, E-30-0,6. K 340). - Lions' teeth or leopards' teeth? (PV 02.2002).
