Photograph was edited for publication purposes The Oakwood School was founded in 1951 by a small group of parents including Sydney and Elizabeth Harmon, Ross and Wendy Cabeen, and actor Robert Ryan and his wife Jessica who opened the school's first campus in their backyard. Oakwood's progressive approach places an emphasis on the arts, sciences, and humanities. The K-12 school has two campuses; the elementary campus is located at 11230 Moorpark St. and the secondary campus is located at 11600 Magnolia Blvd. Photograph caption dated July 4, 1957 reads, "Mary Davidson, teacher of reading, writing and spelling at Oakwood School, 11230 Moorpark St., North Hollywood, instructs young 'demonstrators' while teachers in back attempt to get new ideas for better teaching.
