Description
“The Seth’s Chatri [chhatri]. The seths (merchants) are the famous marwaris, who go to great centres (Culcutta [Kolkata] to), make fortunes and send money to their old homes to erect such monuments.” External view of large ornate building with several domed roofs and canopies. There are several people in front with a camel. “Marwaris”, while specifically referring to people from Marwar in western Rajasthan, eventually came to refer to refer to all Rajasthani people. The term “chhatri” refers to the domed canopies and is considered typical of Rajasthani architecture. Chhatris were often built as cenotaphs for wealthy or important individuals, especially in the Shekhawati region of Rajasthan. ❧ United Free Church of Scotland photographs from the Rajputana mission.
