Photograph was edited for publication purposes Photograph article dated February 13, 1962 reads, "Although one out of five of its residents is in a penal institution, the Newhall-Saugus area has an excellent crime record, says its newest lawman. He is Capt. Max Krukow, new commander of the Newhall sheriff's station, who says that, despite the low crime rate, he has inherited a sizable job. With his 31-man station, Capt. Krukow covers 716 square miles - from the Kern County line to the Los Angeles City line and from Ventura County to the Antelope Valley. 'That's a lot of area,' says the 37-year old Krukow, brushing back a crop of wavy, graying hair. And it's made even more complicated by the seven penal institutions located nearby - containing everything from maximum security jails to honor farms."
