Description
Stamp, or frank, used on mail sent by the Fresno and San Francisco Bicycle Route, which operated between July 7, 1894 and July 18, 1894. An article from The Young Soldier (November 4, 1944) provides a personal account of the bicycle mail service by Arthur C. Banta. The service was established between Fresno and San Francisco, at a rate of 25 cents per letter, during the American Railway Union's strike with the Pullman Car Company during the summer of 1894. The mail was to be deposited at Victor Cyclery, 1730 Tulare Street, Hughes Hotel. The San Francisco headquarters was Overman Wheel Company at the corner of Larkin and McAllister Streets, and San Jose at Marrigot & Co. Article is attached to record as a PDF.
