Description
Camp Sacramento is the setting for this 1928 tug-of-war challenge on the South Fork of the American River. The municipally operated site has been a presence in Sacramento’s recreational heritage since 1920. During the season that this photograph was taken, Camp Sacramento’s reservations had tripled from the previous year. The site’s popularity resulted in several city officials from around the state – Fresno, Berkeley, and Stockton— visiting Camp Sacramento and consulting with George Sim, Sacramento’s Superintendent of Recreation. The 1928 camp season also included a curious attempt by resort-goers to use carrier pigeons to invite the Sacramento City Council and City Manager to visit the camp. The pigeons were provided by the Sacramento Pigeon Club, located in North Sacramento. Once the birds finished their two-hour flight to the club’s headquarters, the invitations were shuttled by bicycle to City Hall by an eager squadron of Boy Scouts.
