Description
Photograph of a drawing by George Baker depicting the San Francisco bay, June 1849. The drawing, which was published in the New York Tribune on August 28, 1849, shows a huge group of large sailing vessels are shown in the bay to the right, abandoned by their crews who went to work in the mines at shore. In the left foreground, a group of four pioneers make their way across the ridge of Rincon Hill, looking northwest. Farther back, the town "Embryo" city can be seen on Angel Island, filled with rancher-style houses. In the distance the hills of Marin are visible. The Telegraph and Russian Hills are also visible. Picture file card reads "Population estimated at 2,000, all adults, with few women and many living in tents. About 200 vessels were detained here, their crews leaving for work in the mines on arrival in port".
