Description
Image of a group of people standing next to a race car labeled no. 18 parked on the side of the road in Santa Monica, California. A sign that reads "Stearns-Knight parking" is seen at left, and there are railroad tracks along the road.
"No. 27"--number written on envelope. Title transcribed from information on original envelope in which negative was received; date devised by cataloger based on style of race car and the period of time that Frank Verbeck was racing in Los Angeles. Frank Verbeck drove the No. 18 car in the Grand Prix race in Santa Monica in 1914 ("The Club Journal," March 14, 1914, page 816). The Santa Monica Road Races were held from 1909 until 1919. The course was 8.4 miles, and run on city streets Ocean Avenue, Wilshire Blvd. and San Vicente Blvd. (Source: Santa Monica Public Library Image Archives.)
