Born in 1829 in London, England to Andrew Cohen and Hannah (Oppenheim) Cohen. Immigrated to Canada and then the West Indies in 1845; came to California in 1849. Settled, initially, in Sacramento, moving to San Francisco in 1852; then to Alameda in 1859. In 1863, formed San Francisco & Alameda Railroad; in 1865, acquired the San Francisco & Oakland Railroad; by 1869, both railroads acquired by Central Pacific RR for which Cohen served as attorney. Died in 1887.
