Med den nye medicin, der er kommet indenfor de sidste 10 år, har man fået et effektivt våben i kampen mod den uhyggelige sygdom. Stadig tager behandlingen dog mindst 6 måneder for dem med høj modstandskraft, og mindst 24 måneder for patienter med lav eller ingen modstandskraft. Den moderne kombinations-behandling består af 3 midler, og er meget effektiv til at gøre patienter smittefri. I behandlingsarbejdet er den store udfordring nu at bruge midlerne ansvarsfuldt, så bacillerne ikke får mulighed for at udvikle resistens. Slide Series, Bangladesh 1990: "Leprosy - the old scourge" - No. 15: Woman receiving medicine. With the new medicine available within the last 10 years, we have got an effective instrument in the battle against the dreadful disease. Still the treatment takes at least 6 months for patients with a high resistance, and at least 24 months, if they have a low or none resistance. The modern combination therapy consists of 3 medicaments, and is very effective in making the patients non-infective. By now the big challenge of the leprosy work is to use the medicine responsibly – not giving the bacilli possibility to develop resistance. Thus we have a chance to control the disease. However, it will still require a lot of effort and take a considerable number of years.
