Description
This digital image of the burned-out Leroy’s Jewelers was taken on the evening of Dec. 29, 2003. The building caught fire in May 2000, exacting more than $150,000 in damage and drawing a three-alarm response from more than 45 firefighters. Up to the time of the fire, the building had been rehabilitated five times. Standing before what was the entrance to the store, and spared by the fire, is a mural documenting the history of Sacramento. Visible in the foreground are light-rail tracks and yellow police tape. The building was razed the day after this photograph was taken by former Sacramento Public Library employee Michael Cockerham.
