Description
View of a contractor standing next to construction of the Old grammar School in Alturas, Modoc County ca. 1911 Old Grammar School 1911. George Fordyce, standing. July 3, 1911 was the date that Geo. Fordyce, stone masoner, readied cornerstone for Alturas' new $20, 350 2-story grammar school building. This was part of the 1911 Independence Day celebration. The building stood where the federated church is today (1980) and was abandoned when a new school on 4th street was occupied in 1935. Fire gutted the 1911 building in 1941 and it was eventually torn down with the brick being purchased by Bayley Dorris. The brick has been recycled into many current Alturas homes.
