Description
A crowd of women stand inside the Cathedral of San Salvador, many of them holding palm fronds. They attend Palm Sunday mass, which included a celebration of the third anniversary of the assassination of Archbishop Óscar Arnulfo Romero. Romero was shot as he celebrated mass in a hospital chapel on March 24, 1980. Pope Francis canonized Romero, now Saint Óscar Romero, in 2018. The United Nations-led Truth Commission investigation concluded in 1983 that Roberto d'Aubuisson, a right wing politician that set up anti-communist death squad in El Salvador, was responsible for the murder of Romero but he was never brought to justice. Richard Cross took this image in 1982 while covering the presidential election and War of Liberation in El Salvador.
