Photograph caption dated October 23, 1964 reads, "Patty O'Haver, 4, Woodland Hills, concentrates on words spoken by teacher, Mrs. Connie A. (Mary) Tidwell, during a John Tracy Clinic demonstration given for the clinic's Northridge guild." Patty placed her hands on the teacher's cheeks as she spoke the word, "long," then repeated the word softly. The teacher insisted she "use good speech." Lip reading is the principal means of communication between the teacher and child. Most children hear slightly and are helped by wearing hearing aids.
