Born in 1823, in New York to Schuyler Colfax Sr. and Hannah Delameter Stryker. In 1842 became editor of the South Bend Free Press. Served as Representative in U.S. Congress from 1855-1869; served as Speaker of the House from 1863-1869; served as Vice President from 1869-1873. Died in 1885.
