Photograph snipe dated May 25, 1973 reads, "Attendant Eddie Valdez job is easier now because the station (ARCO) near Main and Venice in downtown Los Angeles was out of gas due to the fuel shortage. See sign in background." In 1973 the U.S. faced its first of two oil shortages of the 1970s. It was followed by a larger oil shortage crisis in 1979 known as the 1979 Oil Crisis, or Second Oil Crisis.
