Santa Monica Place was designed by Frank Gehry and opened in 1980. It has been renovated twice, once in 1990 and quite extensively in 2009-2010.
Photograph caption dated July 23, 1984 reads, "Department stores like the Broadway in Santa Monica Place are trying to influence shoppers with such techniques as spots of light on items they want to highlight."
