Description
Contact Sheet of 30 black and white photos depicting the installation of the National Historic Landmark plaque at the historic entrance of the Manzanar site. Photos include installing plaque onto granite boulder, and installing boulder onto site at historic entrance. The work crew and equipment used in the installation are from the Independence shop of Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP). LADWP were landowners of the site at the time of the installation of the Landmark plaque. On the back side of contact sheet are several stamps indicating the photos are copyrighted by Dan Smith of Independence, CA. Photo from: "Panel about the presentation and dedication of the National Historic Landmark plaque" panel created by Shiro "Shi" Nomura (ecm_nom_2000). The Eastern California Museum Object ID for this item is 1994.88.1a.
A collection of panel collages created by Shiro and Mary Nomura, both of whom were incarcerated at Manzanar from 1942-1945, for the Eastern California Museum's Manzanar Project. The panels are comprised of photographs, artifacts, documents, and stories collected by "Shi" starting in the 1970s. Over the following 20 years, the Nomuras assembled more than 75 panels depicting their personal interpretation of Manzanar 'camp' life, major events, history, and site preservation efforts. In each panel Shi and Mary provide valuable first-person documentation from their experiences. These panels have been displayed at various community events, annual Manzanar Pilgrimages, and the Eastern California Museum (the permanent home of the collection).
