Photograph article dated February 16, 1957 partially reads, "More than a quarter-century of service with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department came to an end today with the retirement of Lt. Mark M. Smith, 60, of 1946 Seventh St., San Fernando. A testimonial dinner and farewell party was given to the veteran law enforcement officer at the Honor Rancho, Castaic, where the lieutenant spent the last six years in correctional work. On hand to bid Smith farewell were Capt. Ambrose Stewart, Chief Joseph Gaalken, head of the division of correction, Inspector Harold Stallings and other officers of the sheriff's department. Going-away gifts were presented to the retiring officer who joined the department in 1929 after having served the City of Los Angeles as an engineer."
