Yorty snips the ribbon in ceremonies opening Laurel Canyon Blvd. to traffic at the Southern Pacific railroad tracks. Participating in the dedication of the $4 million underpass, from left: Councilman James Potter; actress Verna Felton, honorary mayor of North Hollywood; Donald Tillman, president of the Los Angeles Board of Public Works; Rep. Everett Burkhalter, (D-17th Dist.); Russell Quisenberry, president of the North Hollywood Chamber of Commerce; Councilman Louis Nowell; and James G. Moran, field representative for County Supervisor Warren M. Dorn. Tillman, master of ceremonies at the dedication, said completion of the intersection opening Sherman Way to traffic would take another three or four weeks, 'depending on the asphalt strike.' Before construction of the underpass, the railroad crossings on Laurel Canyon Blvd. and Sherman Way were the scene of several fatal accidents."
