Description
Following the US Supreme Court decision in 1923 that forced May Rindge to open up Rancho Malibu for a public road, construction begins on the State Highway near the beach in eastern Malibu. This paved road would be completed in 1929 as the Roosevelt Highway, linking Santa Monica and Ventura, as well as Mexico and Canada. This photo was taken just inside the Rancho Malibu, near Las Flores Canyon (present home of Duke's Malibu restaurant) looking west toward Carbon Point. Just visible is "Spire Rock", a distinctive landmark on Carbon Point, later demolished to expand the highway in about 1939. complete;
