Description
Note: Signatur: "Knaus X.A.". - Cf. D-30.13.049 gleiches Photo aber mit Studiohintergrund. (PST).
Note translation: Signature: "Knaus X.A." - He was, of course, the Kyebi King Atta. (PJ 07.1998). - Cf. D-30.13.049 same photo but with studio background. (PST). - Based on a photographic print. - Published (HB, June 1881), where the caption reads: "The man on the cane chair in the centre of the picture is [...] the notorious Akem King Ata from Kjebi, who is currently in prison in Lagos. His wife stands on his left [NB the German 'Weib' is somewhat disrespectful: normally the word for 'wife' is 'Frau'.] Next to her is the King's cousin from Accra. His brother Kwasi Kumah and his sister Ameakoah are standing behind him on the right. The King's two 'body slaves' are sitting on the ground. His Majesty is wearing a fetish amulet on his chest and his fingers are spread out to display their wealth of gold rings."
