Title supplied by cataloger. Surfridge was a residential community located in the southern portion of Playa Del Rey, originally Palisades Del Rey, and first developed in the 1920s. Decades later when Los Angeles International Airport expanded and jet -engine aircraft became more prevalent, the high level of airplane noise impacted residents and their quality of life. As a measure of airport noise abatement, the City of Los Angeles purchased or acquired 800-900 homes in Surfridge between 1965 and 1981 through eminent domain and later removed or demolished the structures. An airplane takes off from Los Angeles International Airport as seen from Vista Del Mar (foreground) where it meets one of the former residential streets of Surfridge, December 1975.
