Photograph caption dated December 31, 1959 reads, "At San Fernando Veterans Hospital World War II Mothers of Burbank provide small but important services and gifts that make hospital confinement less frustrating. Pearl Shettler [sic], left, president of Veterans Administration Volunteer Service, brings cheer to William Makula, World War I veteran. Makula, native of Hawaii, enlisted for service in 1917, has been ill 16 months."
