James Fair and Alfred Davis, owners of South Pacific Coast Railroad hired William Edwin Colyer to build steam ferryboats to carry their passengers across the Bay to San Francisco. Launched in 1877, named the "Newark," worked the Oakland-San Francisco run until 1923. Rebuilt in 1923 and renamed the "Sacramento".
