Caption: "Leaf from a Great Bible, 1549 A.D., Imprynted at London in Fletestrete at the signe of the Sunne over agaynst the conduyte by Edwarde Whitchurche; A revision by Coverdale of Matthew's Bible under the patronage of Thomas Cromwell, hence sometimes known as 'Cromwell's Bible.' The first editions were large folios. In 1538 an order was given to the clergy that 'one boke of the whole Bible, in the largest volume, in Englyshe, sett up in summe convenyent place within the churche that ye have cure of, whereat your parishioners may most commodiously resort to the same and rede yt' (Darlow and Moule 49)."
