The Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena, located at 3939 S. Figueroa Street, was officially opened on July 4, 1959 by then Vice President Richard M. Nixon and was designed by Welton Becket; general contractor was L.E. Dixon Company. The last event at the arena was a Bruce Springsteen concert. The arena was closed on March 19, 2016 and demolished to make room for a new soccer stadium. Photograph caption dated October 15, 1963 reads "Leo LaBine, known as the 'Lion,' is one of the key returning players on the 1963-64 Los Angeles Blades. The Blades open their '63 home schedule tonight against the San Francisco Seals, last season's Western Hockey League champions. It will also be the Sports Arena debut of new Blade coach Alf Pike. Last year's coach, Jack 'Red' Bownass, will spend his time this year concentrating on his duties as a number-one defenseman."
