Description
[View of a hotel and other various businesses in Artois, Glenn County circa 1918. Donor: Willows Museum] [Germantown then Artois in WWI - 1918; Germantown 1918: some of the inhabitants of Germantown (now Artois) preferred to have the village, located 6 miles away north of Willows, named Rixville. It was put to a vote and Germantown was the choice of most. However, those preferring Rixville continued to call the north part by that name. To this day, it is Rixville on some maps. During WWI, the name was changed from Germantown to Artois, a providence in France, means artesian. An artesian well was located near Artois.]
